名詞は "What is it?" や "Who is it?" の質問に答え、物、人や場所に名前を与えます。

人々の役目や仕事を述べる言葉の多くは、男性や女性の主語として使われます。例えば cousin, teenager, teacher, doctor, student, friend, colleagueなどです。

- Arthur is my friend. He is a student.
- Jane is my cousin. She is a student.
こうした中立の言葉には、male やfemaleの言葉を足すことで区別することができます。

- I have three female cousins and two male cousins.
たまに、性別のない物を表す名詞に性別のある代名詞を使って親しみを示す場合があります。性別の区別がない代名詞 (it)を使うこともできます。
